Hi Mike

I have an 01 wagon with similar miles & warranty expires in March. I am getting quotes from the dealer on GM extended warranty - I am not considering an aftermarket extension due to all the bad experiences I've heard about (arguments over covered items, supplier goes under, service centre doesn't want to honour warranty, etc etc) and the only place to get a Saab serviced here is the dealer anyways. I'm expecting a quote around $2500 (Canadian) for two extra years.

I am likely NOT going to buy the extension. The car has been pretty solid for the last 20,000KM and I figure a whole TON of stuff would need to break to make it worthwhile on a cost basis in the next two years, never mind the aggravation of dealing with the dealer and trying to get them to cover stuff.

So what might break?

DI - will likely buy a spare for $300
Turbo - if it breaks I will DIY removal and get a local shop to rebuild - failing that, a larger turbo would be purchased. Under $1000 anyways.
"Code 08" - do the cheap fix for $400.
SID - fix it myself for free.
Head gasket - going to do the retorque myself as soon as it's off warranty.
Serp belt pulleys - I'll replace them all myself at 100,000km (60k miles).
Other expensive stuff: might lose an AC compressor or something. Could happen to anyone, any car, any time.

Basically, because I can DIY if necessary, $2500 will pay for a lot of work.
Food for thought,
Les
