Unlike in the 9000/900, the V6 is not a reliability issue in the 9-5. In fact, it may be slightly more reliable. But I would call it a wash.
Two things spring up when I think V6 vs I4-
The V6's that I've driven sound a little 'throatier.' They made a bit more noise on acceleration than the I4, and more than I expected. Some folks may find it objectionable, and others may like it a lot. Once cruising, both engines are pretty quiet. The V6 is smooth, but then again, I find the 4 pretty smooth. The V6 may feel a little faster, but you are looking at a used car. As cars age, they develop their own characterisitics. Some get faster, some get slower. So don't base it on driving one car. And individual cars vary, so if you find a slow one, no matter what engine, look for another.
The other thing is that the V6 came as the SE, which was the top trim package. You get a V6, and chances are you'll get all the goodies/options. This may or may not drive up the price. It's great if you're looking for goodies. The 4 cylinder could be found everywere from pretty base to full up. On the 9-5, the difference between base and full-up isn't great, but you can come across 4-cylinder cars with fewer options. Keep this in mind. It all depends on what you're looking for - Are More Goodies a good thing, or just more to break?
