Do yourself a favor and buy some other brand and save yourself the headaches of the typical Saab owner. I have had a 900, 9000, and currently an Aero 95 all with the 2.3L Swedish I4 engine and as well as another 95 SE with the V6. They all develop problems no matter how well maintained they are. My latest SAAB story is with the V6 that has a design fault with the tensioner - my car had only 45k well maintained miles and the pulley/tensioner went (not the timing belt) and wham $3,700 for head/valve job. Saab claims no responsibility but just read these pages and you will see alot of SAAB stories about this defect. The I4 has a timing chain so you don't get that problem but it has counter rotating shafts and when the harmonic balancer goes, it is also very expensive to replace. I have never heard of any Japanese 4 cylinder with these kinds of issues! Both engines use Saab's unique DI (direct ignition) system; just enter that phrase and see how many hits you get on this web page regarding the problems associated with them. Again, I have had 4 of these cars (currently 3 in house but not for long); do yourself a favor and buy something Japanese that will be reliable unless you like visitng a mechanic and arguing with Saab about what should be their responsibility!!
