We've been hearing that Saab will close down for many years now, since the early 90's. It is nothing new.
GM bought Saab to have a premium brand that could compete with Volvo and BMW. But Saab sells about a quarter what Volvo does, and nowhere close to what BMW does, so it doesn't have the cash flow to make a huge investment. It is a miracle that the new 9-3 came out.
I can't imagine anyone still harbors the delusion that Saab is still a real independent company. The dealers sell a Subaru (9-2), an Opel (9-3), and soon a Chevy (9-7). The 9-5 has some remnants of the Saab lineage, but is still an Opel with a Saab engine, assembled at Saab's lone surviving assembly plant.
GM will milk the brand for a while, but is essentially selling its other cars through the Saab dealer network, and trying to get a premium price for them. It is a good way to sell Opels in the US.
I'm not saying I wouldn't buy another, however. My 9-5 is a great car and if GM can keep producing cars like them with front wheel drive and efficient engines, I'll keep buying them. But with the dollar at 1.30 euros, it becomes very expensive and less appealing given the extreme competition.
