I just had my '98 9-5 "blow up" last night after driving 90 miles on the motorway at a virtually constant 70mph. Exited motorway to (red)traffic lights. Fot down to pull away - initial loss of power, 2 seconds later, clouds of white smoke from exhaust. Waited for recovery vehicle. On arrival, Mechanic looked at dipstick and oil filler funnel - creamy, frothy deposits. Surmised that Head gasket had blown. Car recovered to local garage - I awai diagnosis tomorrow.
Moral = get yours checked for gasket breaking down soon - don't be stranded. I assume a compression test would help show the problem
