I've got an aero suspension w/16 inch wheels and it does better than most stock aero's of the vintage that I've driven w/the 17" wheels. I prefer the look of the 17" wheels.
I didn't go w/the 17 inch upgrade for the same reasons you cite, although I REALLY wish the Gary Fisher wheels came in 16" size. They look great IMHO.
Some on the board have gone to a 225/50-16 and been happy with that trade over the 215/55-16, which gives you a more similar tire patch to the 17" wheel. I'll probably try that on the next summer set. It's a MUCH cheaper option than the low profile 17"'s. IIRC, with that size, the closest Tech II setting is still the 17" size, but check a calculator first!
I've been lazy w/the Nokian WR's I've got on the car now, and didn't have the $$ for another set of tires this year. (Bought 3 sets for 2 cars last year, and the house buying, getting married, and expecting thing has kept me in defensive mode for now!)
FWIW, I'd be looking for credit w/the wheel swap; it will cost you $$$ to change back to 17's.
Or you might do as well just buying a set of 16" wheels that you like and putting your own choice of tire on them, especially if you like a wheel thats been available for a while.
If you are in a winter zone, you will find the 17" performance tires to be scary. You might get a 16" winter package for now, and see where you go with that, first. It's that time of year. If not, disregard.
Depending on which sizes you are going to, be sure the dealer adjusts your wheel size w/the tech II so you have an accurate speedometer!
