I just bought a 99 9-5 SE w/100k miles and am planning to address the head bolts and check for sludge in the pan as soon as enough snow melts off the driveway for me to get under there. A couple further questions:
- I have no record of the head bolts having been retorqued on the car, records going back to about 46k miles. Since there is apparently no way of knowing if they've been retorqued, and not really wanting to retorque them again and potentially overstretch them, is there a torque figure that can be assigned to the final position of the bolts after the 90 degree pull? If so, would it not be sufficient to attempt to loosen at that torque and if the bolts don't move assume that they are sufficiently tight? I've spent a lot of time wrenching on BMWs, and this method is the accepted procedure for checking the bolts on M10 and M30 motors. It eliminates the additional stress of retorqueing the bolts unless they are actually found to be loose.
- Is there a specific engine temperature recommended for retorqueing? Again from my BMW experience, we only retorque on dead cold engines. Same true for Saab?
Thanks.
