In the days of carburetors in an engine warming up by idleing the cylinders are subject to an overly rich fuel mixture for a long time which dilutes the oil on the cylinder walls and guarantees greater wear of the rings. Modern fuel injection systems can compensate for this to some extent. Its still best to drive off immediately. The engine will warm up much faster. Something to do with work, enthalpy, and the Carot Cycle.
