A few thoughts come to mind.
One is the distributor. If the distributor has moisture inside or it's started to arc inside the, you could get poor running like you describe.
Also check the wires leading to the distributor for breaks inside the insulation and for proper charging voltage (~13.8v). If you don't have full voltage some of the electronics parts don't work properly. Worn brushes in the alternator will prevent both full voltage and sufficient current from being produced.
Some '85 models have a problem with the wiring. So check the wires for rotten insulation and replace any that are bad.
Finally, consider the fuel pump and/or fuel filter. If the auxilliary pump goes out, the main pump doesn't get enough fuel to supply the engine. Extra noise from the fuel pump is a sign of impending failure. If the problem goes away with a full tank of gas, then the auxilliary pump is probably bad. If the filter hasn't been changed for a long time, it probably won't hurt to replace it regardless.
