Is it odometer noise, i.e., in the speedometer head unit, or in the cable/housing? Chances are you can disconnect the cable at the head unit and slide the cable up/out, relubricate it and put it back together. Worst case is you have to disconnect it at the trans and replace the cable.
I don't remember if you have to extract the cable at the trans or not, but usually the cable comes out from the head end.
