1. Yes, I know it's very cold here in Iowa, but shouldn't the temperature guage show that the needle moves past the bottom? Does that mean that the guage isn't functioning, or is it a symptom of the thermostat?
Yes it should move. Especially if you're getting heat. The 8v were very good at heating up, so if you're not getting a temp indi it's prob a connection at the gauge sender or a bad sender.
2. The middle section of heater vents (the ones right by the radio) blow nothing but cold air. I'm assuming that means that there's a hose disconnected? Would that explain the temp reading?
This is A GOOD THING! All the OG900 center vent only blows unregulated air temp. Keeps you awake when all the other vents are on Diablo! If it's too cold just shut off the vent.
3. The radio antenna is broken. I have about 8-12 inches of antenna sticking up. What's the best replacement option? (Radio still works, thank heavens for public radio and sports radio.)
If it's a power antenna you may be able to remove the assembly and disassemble it and extract the mast remnant from the reel. A new mast is about 10-20 bux or you can get a new Harada assembly from various vendors for around $50.
4. As a new owner (oh yeah, 8valve 4cyl, 5 speed manual 3 door 1987) is there anything I should be checking regularly or looking at that's a quirk of Saab's? It's got over 206,000 miles, and is still running great.
8v naturally aspirated engine trans should last a good while; the engine is almost bulletproof at its low output level. Just keep changing the dino oil every 3-5k depending on usage, trans lube every 20K (use MTL or pick your synthetic), check the CV joint boots/repair as necessary, be ready to fix the headliner when it falls.
There are a few other things that go with time like radiators, water pumps, harmonic balancers and oil seals, but you fix them as they happen rather than prophylactically (sp?) unless you happen to rebuild an engine or transmission for other reasons.
