I assume by your post that the car will idle in neutral just fine, yes? Can you rev up the engine while in neutral? Can you shift through the gears with the car off or on? Does the clutch take up as expected, or has its feel changed at all? Can you move the car while in gear with the engine off? Try putting it in 5th gear, leave the engine off, and push the car - if you hear bad noises, it's likely something in the tranny. I've only seen one catastrophic failure in a Saan transmission, and that was a carrier bearing in the diff literally self-destructing, leaving the entire diff assembly with substantial amounts of play - bad noises and a lockup were the result. Was the transmission making any noises prior to this happening? A massively failed pinion bearing or shattered housing can cause all sorts of problems - I bought an '85 SPG with a tranny in such shape, and any attempts to move it in 1st-3rd gear caused the tranny to literally lock up - perhaps you've run into something similar; the previous owner of the '85 said there was no warning prior to the failure.
