Some more info would be useful. Justin describes possible problems w/ the transmission, usually caused by a bad pinion bearing. However, some issues need resolution.
When you say that the engine shut down, do you mean that the engine just died, but you continued to roll normally like you'd run out of gas? If not, did you disengage the clutch, put it in neutral, etc. to get it to roll to the side of the road? Was it just a single noise, or did the noise continue until you came to a stop? What kind of noise was it?
When you say that the engine dies when you try to drive it, does that mean that the engine is generating normal amounts of power and the wheels just refuse to turn (transmission problem), or that the engine isn't generating power and just dies when the clutch is engaged, but the car starts to roll (ignition, fuel, etc. problem)?
