My Saab mechanic, who I'd trust with my life, tells me that the 84-86 base (8v non-tubo) models are the best for reliability. I own an 84 base model, and I love that car with every fiber of my being. Is it reliable? The motor runs clean and strong, the gas mileage isn't quite what it used to be, its gone through some repairs, but I'd drive the thing across the country without any hesitation. It has just under 280,000 miles on it. Performance? Well, it will thrill on the open road (it will do 100 MPH on a good day), but acceleration isn't really what you'd call "inspiring." If you're performance minded, than I'll tell you that turbos are A LOT of fun. I have driven several, and I must say that a 1987 Saab 900 SPG was the most fun I'd ever had behind the wheel of a car. Turbos will not last as long as non-turbos, and they reqire more attention than non-turbos, but you'll get more fun out of them. Transmission? 5-speed all the way. They're more fun, they last longer, and they give you more control out of the car. The only reason my car does ANYTHING off the line is because there is a 5-speed in it and I can choose when I shift. From a Saab driver, I want to say that I doubt you'll be dissapointed no matter which 900 you get, we all love these cars for our own reasons, and you'll have no problem finding yours. Good luck in your search...
