No offense, but brakes are safety issues and generally no brainers for the mechanically inclined.

However, from your post it appears you are not mechanically inclined. It is good you're asking questions, but get a Bentley or Saab manual on brakes and read it carefully or take a local community college (ok, I'm assuming you're in the States or have easy access to training which may not be true) class on elementary brake mechanics if not basic automotive mechanices before breaking (sorry, English pun, couldn't resist) into the brake system.

Checking the brake fluid reservoir, engine oil, trans, windshield washer fluid, coolant, etc., are arguably well within the trainable range of the average non-mechanically inclined person. Brake system maintenance isn't that hard, but if it is done wrong, the consequences can be fatal.
