When you change pads you move the piston in the caliper(s) back and whatever grunge or fluid that was in the cylinder gets pumped back uphill, sometimes as far as the master cylinder. If you don't think so, try installing new brake pads after someone has topped up the master cylinder.
Also, with ABS for sure you don't want any 'stuff' getting back up into the ABS head or master cylinder....plays pure hell with little valves and precision components. Best way to push calipers back on ABS cars is to open the bleeder valve before you push the piston back...pushing the piston back will then dump the fluid in the piston rather than push it back uphill.
Every time you change pads you should consider bleeding the system. Even if you bleed the system annually, chances are when you change the pads it needs bleeding on time anyway and probably on performance.
