the pan to trans gasket is preprepped with a compressible sealer. i have not heard of using ANYTHING on it and was specifically instructed by saab to put it on dry and clean. not that turboman is wrong..it may be fine but the saab line is "gasket only". as to the ultra blue. that is used to handle the flexing that occurs there when the behind the flwyheel bolts are omitted ( i reinstalled my bolts and actually use the old style gasket ) ultra grey is better yet actually for that groove and 518 works best on metal surfaces that are relatively flat, especially cast aluminum/iron. I have also used "the right stuff" with very good results in the case where surfaces have some damage. do not over apply 518 just a 1/16" bead down the center will work fine. 518 will only fill to around .020. "the right stuff" will fill to 1/8 in a splash zone ( .vs. pressure seal )
the real key to a good seal is cleanliness. wire brush it with acetone and wipe with alcohol. methylene chloride type paint remover also a good product for removing recalcitrant gasket remains. apply and let set. brush. repeat till shining.
