I had a similar experience with my 85 4door . i agree with the advise on
NEGOTIATING a settlement. The insurance co.s count on most people wanting to settle faster more than they want to hold out for an equitable settlement.
1- make sure they give you fair value..the wealth of price history in the TSN classifieds will help you get closer to your replacement cost. 2 - get your ins. agent to pull up the "salvage"
blue book on your make.mod.year 3- get all your reciepts for repairs made to your car in the last 6-12 months ( depending on your state's ins. regulations). you should start negotiating with the following price:
price No 1 + total repairs no.3 - salvage book price no.2 + 250.00
for aggravation and negotiation room. you will wind up with a dollar amount more than the the book of your car + keep possesion of your "totalled" car ( remember you are SUBTRACTING the salvage value of your
car from your negotiating price). Remember it is YOUR car. if they don't
settle you can always threaten small claims court (depending in your state's small claim maximum) or have your ins. co sue. This is when you find out what kind of insurance company you have. are they just premium collectors or are they willing to go to bat for you?
when you consider the advantages of keeping your old saab , you can part it out (keep in mind the salvaged windshield, hatch + door glass is worth 500.00 min) take the money + the settlement & get another car OR
take the previously posted advise & use the settlement money to fix any mechanical damage, buy the needed body parts & have a local high school or auto tech school do the labor. it is more work for you to coordinate everthing, but you will definitely come out ahead if you are persistent & paitent.
I have owned four classic 900s , all purchased with 80k + miles .I had two of them totalled out in the last three years, so i am way too familiar with your predicament. best of luck & don't let the ins.co push you around! ahab from south bend.
