The offset for wheels changed from time to time, depending on application. I believe the stock offset on the 15x5.5" wheels fitted to '88+ 900s is 38mm. IIRC The offset on earlier 15x5.5" wheels is 40mm, but it may be 35mm - I'll go look tomorrow when it's warmer! On 15x6" wheels, which were officially only fitted to 9000s, the offset is 40mm. On 16x6.5" wheels, there were several offsets - Aeros (3-spoke, grey center) have a 27mm offset, Super Aeros (3-spoke, curved lip) were 33mm. I would be honestly surprised if the offset on those cross-spokes was 38mm, as I *think* that would come close to rubbing even on later, wider-fendered 9000s. Still, Saab was clearly playing with the 16x6.5" wheel, so maybe it is 38mm... I have both Aeros and Super Aeros, so can simply look... :)

As far as rubbing, I've never had a problem with any rubbing on 900s running stock suspension. My '80 5-door is running 215/60-15 tires (no joke! the bastards won't wear out!) and even carrying 500lbs of engine and transmission in the trunk it still won't rub. Once you start lowering the car, though, things get nasty... Even 15x6" wheels rub on my '90 SPG running stock suspension; I ran both "turbine" style and assymetric 3-spoke wheels (40mm offset) and both rubbed under compression. I'm now running Super Aeros (16x6.5", 33mm offset) and they'll rub with a person sitting in the back seat over turns and bumps... So, people simply aren't allowed to sit back there! :)

I am currently running a set of BBS mesh wheels on my '86 900S in a 15x6 size. I'm running Jamex springs, which are quite low, and have never had a rubbing problem, even with four people in the car. Someday I'll pull them off and measure the offset, but I suspect its in the low 30s...

On a 900, especially a lowered one, you must decrease offset to accomodate wider wheels - the fenders simply won't clear otherwise. The lower you go, the less offset you can run since the inside fenderwall slants inward. Problem is, if you bring the wheels too far inboard, you'll rub the suspension members. So the battle is having enough offset to clear the inside, while have little enough to clear the fenders... Working from stock offset, I think you gotta remove 3-5mm for every 1/2" wider the wheel over 5.5"... So a 6" wide wheel should be 33-35mm, and a 6.5" wide wheel should be 28mm-32mm. It's not perfect, but it's a decent rule of thumb, and if nothing else is consistent with Saab's stock offsets...

Thoughts?
