Patrick,
How much oil in the gearbox? What quality and quantity? If, when place in neutral, the car will not roll, even with the clutch depressed, the final drive pinion bearings have seized.

NOTE TO ALL "INLINE ENGINED" SAAB 900 OWNERS: The first sign of pinion bearing failure is relative peace until 3rd is selected, a slight growling will be evident, increasing to a whirring howl in 5th. The reason? The pinion bearings support the mainshaft with reverse being closest to the pinion bearing housing and 5th gear at the farthest. Picture a lever and fulcrum. Place the centre wedge close to want you want to pry (put load under), then move it farther away from the load. It gets easier and you put more pressure against the load. Therefore, lower gears do not tax the pinion bearings since they are closer to the support point. The actual wear, however, is hard standing starts as SAABCars proved to the Swedes back in '84 when they BROKE three pinion bearing housings in new 900 Turbos by doing "hole-shots". No trans could take more than nine full-boost standing starts. Now the bearings were intact, it was their housing that fail. So after years and miles with an impoved housing, the bearings can fail if abused or suffer momentary lack of lubrication.

Red-Line Oil, frequent changes and "slip" the clutch a bit on a hard take-off, (impact starts are detrimental) will prolong your gearbox.
As long as it's only the pinion shaft bearings and no syncros or shafts, expect $900 to $1000 to R&R and repair.
Conchyjoe
