Assuming you're talking about hatchback and not a 4-door, my advice is to stick speakers in the rear side panels. You can stick anything up to 5.25" in diameter and about 2 1/4" deep in there, which is most every 5.25" speaker... On my '86 900S, I previously had a pair of crappy Boston Acoustics CX5s, but just replaced them with a pair of Blaupunkt Overdrive 5.25" components (which were on sale for $100/pr at Crutchfield!). I took it a step further this time, and bought some 3/8"x3/16" adhensive foam weatherstripping and ran it around the edge of the interior panel to help create a better seal. I am *exceptionally* happy with the results - the stereo sounds absolutely fantastic.
I find this solution better than either the 6x9+adapter solution and sticking speakers in the parcel shelf. The rear panel area forms a surprisingly well-sealed box which helps improve bass response vs. using the poorly sealed hatch area, Additionally, you don't have to worry about the speakers getting in the way if you want to remove the parcel shelf. Plus, being horizontal, they aren't directly exposed to sunlight or prying eyes.
Here's what the Bostons looked like:

I'll have pictures of the component setup posted this weekend....
