Head gasket, oil leak, coolant leak Posted by Todd [Email] (#958) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Todd) on Sat, 3 Feb 2001 10:59:59 In Reply to: Head Gasket? (long), tlrm, Fri, 2 Feb 2001 13:13:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I agree. Make sure where the leak is coming from.Check for oil in the coolant and the reverse.
If you do need to pull the head off don't be worried. I just did mine three times (problems that you can read on my previous posts). It really is not hard at all. Quite within the average persons skill set. Just get the Bentley and follow it through.
A couple points if you do the head gasket:
1.) Confirm that you have the correct gasket. the 2.0l gasket looks identical but if installed on a 2.1l eng will produce a ticking noise similar ro valve noise. The piston will tag the gasket that is slightly too small.
2.) Disconnect the head pipe from the exh.manifold and put a bag over the head pip to prevent coolant from entering the catalytic conv.If this happens it will produce so much steam that you will think the gasket failed as soon as you started it up. It took me about one hour of driving to get rid of the steam.
3.) Use a small film of anerobic sealant around the problem areas on the gasket. These would include the area where the three surfaces(head, timing chain cover, block) meet and at the other end where the oil return gallery is. Makew sure you don't get this sealant too close to the piston holes. I put a very small film on both sides of the gasket.
4.) Clean all surfaces perfectly. Not a trace of old gasket. Once this is done wipe surfaces down with rubbing alcohol before assembly.
5.) Leave exhaust manifold on head
6.) Use the wood dowel they suggest in the Bentley for lining the head up during assy. This prevents damaging the new gasket.
7.) Don't bother draining the block as suggested in the Bentley(as long as you cover the ex. head pipe as stated earlier). The drain is impossible to get to unless you are that shape shifter guy from Deepspace 9.
8.) During assy. don't use any sealant on the new valve cover gasket until you have started it up and confirmed that you are indeed done. Then take the cover off and clean it with brake clean and do as the Bentley says and seal up the ends and install. Do not over tighten these bolts.
I'm not suggesting that you have to do this yet but if you discover that you need to these points should help the job go smoother. I know they would have helped me.
It really is easier than it sounds
