>>Do people own these cars because of how they
look and how they drive when they are in good working order and just put up with all the repairs out of love for the car?????<< YES!!! LOL!
Although no SAAB 900 in my family, new (1) or used (2), has been problematic when young (under 100k), I do hear about them (the only one to give me grey hair is my current one, '85 900S 177k, over the past year). It's hard to rationalize/figure out. In addition to those problems, add all of those age-related problems (because many SAAB's live to a ripe old age and darn near qualify for Medicare...) and you get a stereotype (in the States, at least) for unreliability.
I think it's partly magnified by how American cars here appear to be built to run fairly trouble free and when they get sick, euthanize them and start anew. And how is it Japanese cars just refuse to die w/ minimal care?! ;o) The SAAB's, at least in old age, need some nurturing but also reward you with both longevity AND a great drive as well.
P.S. The heater valve and blower motor (bearing, yes?) don't surprise me - both weak spots. The crank pulley is debatable. The wheel bearing is a little surprising (designed "for life of car" ie 150k or so, though the fronts can wear prematurely). Save money for the trans someday.
