1. & 2.: A machine shop will be able to determine if there is any erosion in the head which might not be visible to the naked eye. Mine required some TIG welding to fix spots which had not yet resulted in a leak but would have in a short time. I removed my cams and had the valves checked and new seals installed while I was at it.
3. I just use enough gasket sealant to hold things in place during assembly.
4. Always use sponsors. It's unlikely local stores would have everything you need in stock anyway, and the folks dealing with Saabs all the time can help you with items you may not have thought of when doing a job; e.g. belts, t-stat, hoses, etc.
5. A wooden dowel rod slightly smaller in diameter than a cylinder head bolt makes removing and replacing the head much simpler by keeping it properly oriented. The tilt of the engine makes things a bit more difficult without a guide.
