I would not recommend changing to synthetic oil on a high mileage car. Why? Because its going to leak and its more expensive to replace it. Also because with those kind of miles you already have extensive engine wear and the synthetic isn't going to really prolong engine life. Also with that kind of engine wear you want to change oil more frequently not less frequently as synthetic would usually allow for in a newer engine. I switched my last car to synthetic at 150,000 and it threw a main bearing at 250,000. I don't think the synthetic helped much either way, it just cost more.
