Hello all-
I'm about to begin an upgrade of my car's audio system. I have a 87 900t with the stock factory clarion tape deck and seperate eq. I've loved this setup so far, though it has a few problems. bear with me. . . (those who don't want to be bored by my ramblings, please skip to the last paragraph to see my real question)
First and foremost, the stereo works quite sporadically. Classic symptoms of a bad solder joint or the like - sometimes when I go over a bump, I'll loose sound for a few seconds. Sometimes, the radio actually shuts off, sometimes, it looks like it is still on, but no sound from the speakers. Rather than screw around trying to find a bad connection inside the unit, I'm gonna replace it. I'm just hoping (with fingers crossed) that the problem is inside the head, and not in the car's wiring somewhere.
In an attempt to verify that the problem was in the head, I installed an (identical) factory unit from a friend's 86 9000t. It had been out of the car, sitting in his moist garage, for years. That unit didn't work all the time either, though the symptoms were different, making me believe (or hope at least) that the problem was indeed inside the stereos, not the car's wiring. Any thoughts on this?
On to the exciting stuff. I'd like to replace the factory system with a cd-reciever head. I'll fill the empty slot later with some gauges or something. I have about $200 to spend on a head. I'm gonna buy from crutchfield, and right now the Panasonic MXE CQ-DFX301U is my number 1 choice (detachable/folding face, 22x4 watts RMS, wireless remote, front and rear pre outs, w/ seperate sub pre out). The thing that attracts me most to it is it has a nice, clean look. So many heads look to me like someone just drew a bunch of snazzy buttons and then crammed them all together. Anyone have experience with this or another head with similar features? The future is wide open, so I like the 3 sets of pre outs and the changer controls on this thing. I also like the remote, though I wish it were the steering-wheel mount type.
I've talked enough. Lets hear from everybody as to their favorite aftermarked CD-reciever heads.
Thanks,
Nate
