I purchased a 1990 900s- my first Saab- about 2 months ago. I can honestly say, for the first time, that I enjoy driving. The metaphor of bland food vs. spicy food is perfect for describing the experience. I've been thinking about it in terms of beer. A honda is like a watery bud, sure it gets you where you want to go, but your not proud of it the next day. While a Saab is like a Chimay, you savour it and it energizes you while it intoxicates you. A nice paradox.
So I say go for the Saab. If it does not work out, you can always get a Honda. I told myself if the Saab was a pain in the butt, I'd say screw it and get a Hyndai (cant even spell it!) with a 10 warranty. I hope my Saab keeps up the good work- because I can't go back!
Just as a point of practicality: try to low ball (obviously) whomever you deal with, such that you account for misc work. Do a little research and see what might be going bad on the model and year you are interested in. If you have a AAA dianostic center, take the vehicle there. They don't do repairs, they just give the car a check up. I found out about the service only after I bought mine. And buy a bentley manual, there are some very simple jobs that would cost a lot at a mechanic that are easily doable with the help of the book and the great folks on this BB.
Best wishes!
