And spectroscopic oil analysis with Amsoil on my 900T shows less ppm wear metals and contaminants in my 900T and Volvo 7xxT cars at 10K than in dino oil at 2-3K miles, much less 5-6k miles.

And our new Audi A6 4.2Q V8 has an 8-9K change interval (even when it was new...break-in oil) with dino oil although it also has 8.5 quart oil capacity. Incidentally, the Audi just hit 17.2K and hasn't used any oil in the last 8000 miles with Amsoil 20W-40 Marine Synthetic. I'll be running the first oil analysis on the car at the 18K service next month...I expect it to indicate the oil is serviceable and uncontaminated.

Generally the synthetics have a better additive package and don't break down. IF the lubricant is getting contaminated, you're right, nothing is going to fix that (although a bypass micron oil filter will go a long way towards removing contaminants) but it can be detected with oil analysis.

I've tried various oil change intervals and oil analyis and have settled on 10K/1yr on the 900T with a micron bypass filter and 10K on the volvo turbos even without the bypass filter. The Audi gets changed at 8K for warranty reasons.
