That's a crock on the old style pans...unless they can't find a gasket for the old pans. The new pans and gaskets are better and won't leak, but the old pans can be resealed. They just don't want to do it and make a profit on both labor and parts on the new pans/gaskets. That being said, I did have the new pans and gaskets put on my 87 900T when I had the automatic transmission fluid thermostat and hoses changed. BTW, the thermostat is no longer replaced, it's bypassed as unnecessary. Those hoses were really expensive too.
One guy at SPG9 recommended changing out the ATF every second engine oil change for transmission longevity, certainly every 30K miles.
A flush is good...allows you to get it all out rather than just 3-4 quarts by draining the trans.
