How can I tell if a tranny is locked up?

Ok I know I have been posting a ton of questions about trannies but I am buying one on sat. and i want to look as smart as possible.
I have heard that trannies that have been used too much lock up and are not rebuildable. How can I tell if a tranny has been locked up, I am assuming that the one I am buying will be separated from the engine.
So far I plan to
#1 ask them to unplug the drain plug so I can try to feel washed up particles.
#2 Open up all the plates and take a look inside.
How does this sound?
I am getting the Tranny from a saab place in MN, called Andrews of Princeton!
What kind of questions should I ask the mechanic that is selling it to me?
I plan to ask him how many miles are on it, I am not sure if there is a warranty but it is hard to find a tranny around here.
MY saab is not a turbo so if the tranny is of a turbo is that a big difference?
Thanks for all the valuable info, I love this site.
