Yeah, you shouldn't really be hearing any noise from your tranny. I have an '85 SPG with 214k that I have had for the past 50k and I don't know if the tranny has ever been rebuilt, but on the other hand it doesn't make any noise either. Concerning the 10w30, it really depends on what was in there before. If you had motor oil, then fine, the owners manual recommends 10w30 (forget about the "I don't think that is heavy enough" stuff, just stick with what the owners manual tells you, they built the thing after all). But if you had gear oil in there previous to the shop draining and filling with motor oil, then you really need to get it out of there an put gear oil back in, otherwise you are DEFINITELY in for big problems. If you are down south, http://www.townsendimports.com recommends Amsoil racing series 75w90 gear oil. Redline MTL is also good, and I put Mobil 1 75w90 synthetic in my 900 with good results. Lastly, go easy on the tranny, Saabs inherently have weak trannys, so don't downshift and use the tranny to slow the car (brakes are much easier to fix than a tranny).
I think it is common for the drainplug to have stuff on it when you drain the tranny. Its there to pick up random particles that occur from wear and use, so I wouldn't worry about that.

If in doubt, have a reputable Saab mechanc drive it and advise you.

Good luck,

Greg
