multiple problems, 1 potentially serious on '89 900

it was raining yesterday and an old demon returned to my '89 900... the car started to sputter and backfire pretty heartily... i lost power momentarily, although i was able to get it back up to speed (on the shoulder)... closer to home the problem returned, the car stalled although i was able to get it started again...

last time this happened i replaced my distributor cap and spark plug wires and that seemed to do the trick (until yesterday)... another post suggests the next step would be replacing the wire from the cap to the coil.. that sound right?

the backfiring yesterday blew out some of the weakest spots of my old exhaust so i think it is finally time to get that replaced... any suggestions (i'm located in Monmouth County, NJ)..

now for the bad part... i just checked my oil and there seems to be white colored specks mixed in with it... it wasn't like that 2 weeks ago when i last check it... level was fine, oil color was fine (apart from the specks).. could this be related to what happened yesterday with the backfiring and all?
