1988 900T check engine light and other problems...should i fix it

the other day my check engine light went on and i didn't think it was that terrible because my car still got me home. i pulled over to take a look but since i'm not mechanilcally inclined i didn't see anything wrong. anyway, i have a 1988 900T with 197K on it. i've had it for 6 years and i love it dearly. the shop said a lot of things are wrong. it will cost $1,000 to get everything taken care of. so, since i'm a student and i'm not sure if i can pay that right now i don't know what to do. as much as i love the car and as good as it has been to me i'm worried that if i put all this money into it now it may just totally die soon. i've taken care of it - general maintenance and the such but i guess cars just hit a point where sometimes it doesn't make sense to keep putting money into it. worse things may go wrong with it within the next year and then getting those items fixed would be really difficult.
so, just as a general question to other saab enthusiasts - should i get it fixed? that may be an odd question but i just can't make any sort of decision. has anyone sold their past cars for parts? how has that gone?
thanks,
molly
