Before you dig into the harmonic balancer replacement, you should try a few things. 1) tighten your belts a bit to see if the noise goes away.
2)Check that your belts are not worn and glazed. If they are, and even if Step (1) cured the noise, you should replace them because the noise will reappear.
3) To check out the harmonic balancer make a chalk mark across the edge of all three pulleys at the crankshaft. If after a few starts, the mark on the pulley closest to the firewall no longer lines up with the mark across the other two, then your balancer is slipping and needs to be replaced. The outer (A/C) pulley is attached to the inner hub of the balancer and the inner two pulleys (Altenator) are attached to the outer ring of the balancer. When there is slippage of the rubber donut in between the hub and the ring of the babancer, the A/C pulley will move in relation to the other two.
If your balancer is bad, you need to pull the A/c compressor out of the way (hoses attached), remove the alternator, remove the A/C pulley from the hub, and then remove the big 30mm nut from the hub. To get this nut off, you need to either lock the engine in place by sticking a screwdriver into the flywheel teeth near the starter or crank the engine briefly with a breaker bar against the frame. It's also hard to get a socket over the hub nut and a cut down socket makes it easier.
