Keep in mind that the posted octane is the MINIMUM legal requirement. That is, a company can legally sell 88 octane as 87, but can't sell 86 octane as 87. There is refinery variation in what the true octane is. It is possible to find one brand where 87 works great (because it exceeds the 87 minimum), but another company where 87 results in knock (barely meets the 87 minimum). This variation is more refinery specific than company specific. This is because the major oil companies trade product depending on refinery location. That is, Company A trades a million gallons in Houston (where they have a refinery), to Company B for a million gallons in Los Angeles (where Company B has a refinery). Therefore, if one brand of 87 doesn't work, another brand may. And a discount outlet may sell the EXACT same gas (i.e. same refinery) as the major oil company station on the next block.
Personal story: Lived in Philadelphia some years ago and could buy regular there that worked fine in the car I owned at the time. The brand I bought had a refinery in Philly area. When traveling to West Virginia to visit family, I frequently noticed issues with the regular there. (Regardless of brand name, since much of the gas in the area was supplied by a single refinery in KY.)
