1990 base car trans GM 457 12 (larger forward pinion bearing). 165K mi when wrecked. Trans worked fine. No play whatsoever in pinion bearings, everything in good shape excepting the obligatory chipped teeth on reverse gearwheel and idler and a very worn 1/2 fork. In my opinion, this trans has never been apart before.

The measured rotating torque load on the bare shaft measured as for new bearing set-up- a scarcely measureable 3-4 in lbs. It barely blipped the needle of my torque wrench which reads around +2 in-lb at actual zero. This jibes well with my observation that they turn pretty freely when the bearings aren't damaged. Set up properly with new bearings, they are difficult to turn by hand without attaching a sprocket to increase leverage.
