The key is gripping the line securely enough to force it on w/o damaging it. A homemade tool can be made using a pair of int/exh valve keepers and a pair of pliers. Should be brazed but epoxy may work as they only need to be held in place-their taper may hold them during use provided they are oriented proerly with respect to the force you are applying. Heat should be avoided as the seal is never as secure but a hair dryer does a nice job. Just be aware that motors contain an ignition source for vapors too. Get a 17 mm bicycle cone wrench and put an offset on the head after heating to a dull red and use it to properly counterhold the check valve next time you remove a pump. The easiest solution to your current problem is avoiding it. But I can't say I've never ended up in the same boat. I usually get a new 4-6 in piece of line from a wreck with the nipple attached and join it to the existing line with a 3" piece of braided sheath fuel line, butting the ends within the braided line and adding a pair of clamps. If you broke the line at the nipple when removing it, half your battle is that the line is too short to reattach it right. you can pick up some slack by loosening the clamps holding the fuel tank and dropping it. There's usually some slack squished in there.
Good Luck!
