I was hoping you would be able to get that line back on....I'm sorry that I did not see the possibility that you might take it off the banjo for the work....
the factory manual does describe heating the fitting (with pictures no less) as the means to get the fittings on....but as you indicated it is tough when you must keep it cold. I think you did pretty good to get two barbs on.....I can only think of something like a round fixed plier opening which provides plenty of push but limited squeeze......not to compress it too much where it will crack....
