What can I do to cool my 900 down??? Posted by Jake [Email] ![]() ![]() |
89 900, 150K, 5 speed... Car was runnin fairly hot at stoplights and drive thru's.. I was getting worried, considering it is winter up here in vermont, and if the car is slightly over heating (enough to make the fans come on at stoplights and extended idles) then it's going to get much worse in the summer.. The radiator and thermostat are both new within about a year and a half. The thermostat is working, I can feel that top hose heat up when it lets the hot coolant out of the engine. I drained and flushed the entire cooling system (radiator, block and core) using the bentley manual and the instructions off the Townsend site. I bled the system exactly as described by the townsend site, and also the next morning. I've bled it a couple times since then (a week ago), and nothing but straight coolant comes out. Yet the engine still runs a bit warm in town, and even has run up to 50 or 60 % on the gauge on the highway.. There aren't any coolant leaks anywhere, and I'm not loosing coolant anywhere. The only thing I can think of is that I'm quite sure my heater valve is headed south. If I put the temperature knob anywhere below pure heat, it leaks a bit of antifreeze onto my left foot. Also, when I very first start the car in the morning, and I speed up the idle just a bit, I can hear a slight gurgling in behind the dashboard. No noise coming from the water pump. What could be causing my system to still be running warm? Most of the time on the highway it runs great, 30 to 40% up on the gauge, just like it should. But every now and then on the highway it heats up, and it almost always heats up during extended idles after the car is already warmed up. Also, when I flushed the system, the water came out clear, and seemed to be flowing fine with no blockage...
TIA,
Jake
