All advice is correct but RS adds the point about damaged teeth. A chipped tooth can lead to stubborn engagement no matter how flawlessly everything else performs. Engaging another gear first solves the ubiquitous problem of bring the rotating parts to a stop. But when a tooth on the reverse gearwheel is deeply chipped, and it is one of the teeth presented to the idler gear for engagement it may just not let the idler slide in. The key then is to rotate the gearwheel ever so slightly so that the relative positioning of the teeth on the gearwheel and idler gear change. The best way to do this is to move the car, either by rolling if on an incline, or engaging a forward gear. As little as an inch or two is more than enough. Forcing it under these conditions risks further internal damage .
