timing chain out after 10 days of driving

I just purchased a 70k 900 1993 Saab S ($3,200). - a bit more than I would normally pay due to the paint(sun peel,no rust though) but with the maintenance records looking good and the car loooking straight and in good shape and seemed to run good I bought it.
So much for that. While my wife was drive she said she heard a small sound and the car quit -she coasted to a stop 50 feet up off the side of the road. Course it wouldnt start. After looking at fluid levels, battery, and spark I had the car towed to the dealer.
I heard from others he was honest and legitimate, and he does seems to be to me to, I'm guessing this is a freak occurence? He said they've never replaced a timing chain before and this was a first. The mechanic said the timing chain was split. They are considering two alternatives - replace timing chain and gears and Or replace the engine with one that has close to same miles.
Which one should I push for and any advice would be helpful.
(Current estimate is 1,000 dollars. He said he'd try to help me out with the costs even though it is as is warranty. I didnt think to ask and assumed the 1k was the full cost and he was going to help me out with it, I better ask.... )
It seems $250 for parts, and 6-10 hours of work to replace the timing belt would be the normal doing some searches on this stuff (but Im guessing their was no engine damage) - does that sound right?
Truly
A new Saab owner who now wonders why the heck the engines were mounted backwards.
