If the timing chain went and the crankshaft continued rotating, you have a few bent valves. The SAAB 16-valve is an interference engine, so the valves will contact the piston crowns if the camshafts stop.
At the very least, (assuning there's no damage to the pistons or cylinder walls) you need to rebuild (or replace) the head, replace the timing chain (it's not a belt), maybe replace the slide for the tensioner and timing gears.
If they have the valve cover off, take a look for yourself to see the chain condition.
It can be done in the car - a friend of mine had a '90 900S that had the same thing happen at 68k miles. An ingenious mechanic somewhere in Vermont figured out how to pull the timing chain cover and do all of that work with the engine still in the car. He owned the shop and said that this one was *his* to do because he never got to have any fun with the cars anymore.
Good luck with this one.
