Don't overlook the probabability of bent rims or a damaged belt. I'm not the poster boy for bent rims, just close! Alloys bend relatively easily, and the OEM runout specs for steel rims are about an order of magniturd higher than the machined alloys.
With three cars and 17 rims, it seems I'm at Ye Ole Wheel Shoppe (a real place in Laurel or Elkton--they moved, not sure which but I know where to drive--MD that straightens rims). It's about $80 to straighten a mildy bent alloy wheel, $100 on up if welding is involved; I don't know if it's worth it to straighten a steel wheel since they're about $50 or so.
Since you're getting new alloy wheels, why not consider 16" aftermarket wheels. Maybe there are some forged ones out there, TireRack may be able to hook you up with some tires already mounted, go to 16x6.5 and some 215/50ZR-16 tires (anyone know a wheel mfr/tire combo that would work for this guy's 87 900T?)
One last point that maybe someone else can comment on...the drivetrain on these cars isn't that strong to begin with and maybe a set of tires that don't hook up all that well isn't a bad deal...better a spinning/peeling tire than a torn pinion bearing!
