I've used the Bars Leaks product for cooling systems with excellent results. It works very well with leaking 9000 heater cores if you catch them early. Other folks use it from day one in their cooling systems and report no heater core issues and longer-lived water pumps.
As to oil additives, that's a different story. I've always been a bit leery of them. A lot depends on where the oil leak is. If you've got a little oil getting by valve seals, it might help. But I'll bet that if you've got a leaky valve cover gasket, or a bad main seal, it won't.
