Whatever you drive, you either must maintain or it will deteriorate; that's a given. (Not unlike our magnificent, youthful physiques, which of course are just as trim and muscular well into middle-age -- with increasing maintenance.)
Older cars APPEAR to require TLC and maintenance somewhat more frequently than newer cars. I think this is merely a superficial appearance, however: newer cars need just as much maintenance and TLC, but they hide the symptoms of neglect for a while, and when problems start to appear, the negligent owner foists the problem off on someone else and buys a new car to neglect.
A pilot instructor once told me: If you maintain a car on the same schedule and with the same care as an airplane, it will last FOREVER. Saabs, particularly, will last an amazingly long time with routine maintenance and the occasional, but infrequent, big-ticket repair.
Don't let the immediate cycle of repair obsure these facts. Maybe it's time to swap your "fleet" for one good, well-maintained car (hopefully a Saab). Decide what you want to drive; set reasonable expectations that balance performance and reliability within your own comfort zone; resign yourself to the periodic maintenance and an annual "Aw nuts!" repair; then go for it.
We've all been there. The best you can hope for is to make a decision that you don't regret in 6 months. Good luck.
