Hello everyone-

I've got another problem with my friend's 86 900 base (114k) 8v. It is ever-so-slowly loosing coolant. I topped it off last week, before she took a 1,000 mile road trip. When she got back yesterday, it was down about an inch in the resivior.

A quick 5 minute inspection revealed no obvious leaks. All the hose fittings I could see were tight and dry. I doubt it is the headgasket - there is no sign of water in the exhaust, oil in the coolant, or coolant in the oil. The radiator looked completely dry, and actually pretty clean.

Two things caught my eye. (Excuse my ignorance, I know not what to call these items, I am not familiar with the 8v engine.) On a hose right near the radiator, there was a metal fitting in the line with some wires plugged into it. This was pretty corroded, though dry.

The other spot is where a coolant hose attached to the front of the engine (or technically the back of the engine, I am referring to the end of the engine near the radiator) there was more corrosion. This corrosion even looked a teeny bit damp, but it could have been oil leaking out of the valve cover gasket. (This fitting is right next to the distributor cap)

Anyone know what these two fittings do? Could they be the source of the leak? Right now my plan of action is:
1. Degrease and clean the engine to make leaks more visible.
2. Put some stop-leak product in the coolant.
3. wait a week and see what happens.
4. Convince my friend to buy me an 8v bently manual, so I know what I'm doing when working on her car from now on!

Any advice would be appreciated. Where are some points that people have found slow leaks on these engines?

TIA,
Nate
