The leak probably occurs only under pressure (when warm), and evaporates quickly. Best way is to pressure test the system (easy, accurate, fast). I own a pressure tester for that reason (and to bleed brakes...). The tester (and adapter) was a little expensive though. First place I would suspect is the L-shaped hose near the thermostat. Do locate the leak, since a small leak in a head gasket would mean it will fail soon...
