Power windows can't decide if they want to work

I have an 84 900 Turbo.
About four years ago the front passenger window quit working periodically, but after hitting it with a rubber mallet (per Saab technician's advice) to eliminate the short in the motor, it worked fine for a couple years. Then, my own window quit working, for the most part. I tried swapping the switches in the middle console to see if the problem rested there, but it did not matter which switch I used to control which window--the problem window would not work.
The wierd thing was that when I had a problem with my window, sometimes I could just press really hard on the switch, and the window would operate. Soon the front passenger window and rear driver window quit working altogether, but my window started working fine (and has for last couple years).
Has anyone has this problem? Do I need to pull a couple window motors from the salvage yard (or buy them new), and if so, is replacement a tough job? I helped my father-in-law replace his window motor on a van, and we had a tough time wiggling out the old one after we drilled out the rivets that held it in (not service-friendly).
I have plenty of time to think about this, so please respond--I will be reading.
Much thanks.
