I first thought of the primary drive chain tension and using a long extension listened to the top of the chain housing. Had that nice and smooth sound of a well-oiled chain. Also listened at the clutch. Quiet. The noise is apparently coming from the gear box...could contact and listent to the box at the dipstick inlet only. Plan on buying a mech stethescope and getting under the car to figure out exactly where in the box. It really does make a big difference when the car is pointed downhill or decelerating (noisy) vs sitting level (noise absent). Weird.
