People will give them to you for free. I'm on my second free SAAB. Your bad pinion bearing scenario mean owners of otherwise fine cars find themselves facing catastrophic repairs reducing the car's worth to zero.
For the price of hoist rental, pinion goodies, and qualified set-up labor, you too can own your very own nice car for pennies on the dollar. BTW, SAABs are the easiest engines to pull this side of a VW Beetle.
My present free car had chronic starting problems and the owner got fed up. With the help of the fine minds on this BB, it will cost me about 600 bucks to put everything right, and I mean everything. At the end, I will have a straight, shiny, LA rust-free 1983 900 Turbo with 88,000 miles I can keep or sell without taking a loss (this car is worth at least 2k running). Any car you can own without taking a huge hit in repairs or depreciation is a good car.
While profiting from the misfortunes of others may seem odorous to some, I feel the worthy act of SAAB reincarnation keeps me karmically one with the universe, an important ingredient for life in LA.
